But today, cider is back.Īnd it’s more diverse, more accessible - and perhaps more American - than it’s ever been. A century ago, much of its popularity was wiped out by Prohibition. Before rum, before whiskey, hard cider was the American booze. He was, essentially, an American Dionysus : a nature-loving mystic who knew the power and joy of alcohol and sought to share it with as many as people as possible. Johnny Appleseed didn’t believe in grafting, and he wasn’t planting apples to feed the people: He was planting trees whose fruit was exclusively turned into hard cider and sometimes applejack - a 60 proof spirit culled from freezing hard cider. Anyone who wants edible apple plants grows grafted trees. Apples, Michael Pollan writes in Botany of Desire, the first chapter of which is dedicated to Chapman and apples, don’t “come true” from seeds: “An apple tree grown from seeds will be a wildling bearing little resemblance to its parent. The trees he planted, though, would never bear edible fruit, and everyone he encountered knew it. By the 1830s, Chapman ran a chain of apple tree nurseries running from western Pennsylvania through central Ohio and clear into Indiana. īut if there’s something the Disney-fied version of Johnny’s history gets dead wrong, it’s what those apples were for.īorn John Chapman on September 26th, 1774, in Leominster, Massachusetts, Johnny Appleseed headed west, on foot, at age 23, planting apple orchards wherever he landed. He was definitely as mystical and nature-loving as mythology purports him to be. Johnny Appleseed was very much a real person, and he most certainly walked halfway across the country planting apple seeds. Unlike those two legends, however, most of what we learned about Johnny Appleseed in grade school is true. In the hierarchy of American mythology, Johnny Appleseed ranks right up there with George Washington’s cherry tree and Paul Bunyan. It demonstrated full compatibility with the cool range of the SAC305 window, establishing itself as a viable drop-in replacement for almost any SAC-based SMT process. Despite SnCuNi’s higher melting point, it formed good joints, passing every standard test to which it was subjected. A reflow process with a peak temperature of only 234☌ and 60 seconds above 217☌ is considered the low end of the window for SAC305. The results of this test were eye-opening. Therefore, thermal cycling was eventually eliminated from the test plan. A similar study that compared the two alloys on a more complex PCB completed 3000 cycles (0-100☌) with no remarkable results. However, given the good appearance, microstructure and solder joint strength, it is highly unlikely that any solder joints would fail during cycling, and no new knowledge would be gained from the effort. Thermal Cycling: Original experimental plans included thermal cycling 5 full assemblies from each alloy set. The thermal aging had no significant impact on shear strength values, as seen in figure 5. Shear strengths averaged 4-6kg, which is typical for this component size and comparable to previous tests run with on assemblies with peak temperatures of 245☌. Joint Strength: 0805 components were shear tested at 15° angles before and after thermal aging. Both alloys demonstrated similar IMC growth during the second aging, as shown in figure 4. The initial cycle had no significant effects on the IMC or the solder joint shear strength. They were then subjected to two thermal aging cycles an initial one at 125☌ for 96 hours and a subsequent cycle at 150☌ for 240 hrs. In the as-reflowed state, both alloys formed continuous IMCs approximately 3μm thick. Microstructural Analysis: Optical microscopy showed good wetting to both leaded and leadless terminations, and good IMC formation. Although the voiding levels are acceptable, they could likely be mitigated by adding a soak to the reflow profile. The X-ray analysis showed more voiding in the SnCuNi solder joints than the SAC305, as shown in figure 3. They all passed, and the assemblies were earmarked for thermal cycling. Photos of the typical solder joints produced in this process are shown in figure 2.ĥ PCBs from each alloy group were then fully assembled with PTH and wave soldered, and installed into chassis for functional test. The SnCuNi solder joints formed under the cooler profile did not exhibit the typical luster that is characteristic of the alloy, but were not as dull as the SAC305. No defects were found by either inspection process. Inspection & Electrical Test: AOI took place on the assembly line, and visual inspection was performed by the line’s IPC-certified inspectors. Following assembly the boards were subjected to numerous tests and analyses. Both pastes used the same flux, and the two products ran down the assembly line sequentially with no changes to any portion of the SMT process. The experiment consisted of two runs – one with SAC305 solder paste and one with SnCuNi solder paste. was dictated by thermally sensitive components on the PCB, which was a mixed-technology industrial controller of low-medium complexity. It dropped the SN100C alloy into a reflow process considered cool for SAC305 the temperture peaked at 234☌ with only 60 seconds above 217. But a newly published study 1 explored exactly that situation. Until recently, we had no real-world, production-based data on the soldering behavior of the SnCuNi alloy near the low margin of the reflow window. Laboratory tests have demonstrated good wetting at lower temperatures, but they’re just that – lab tests. It’s that 7-degree difference in minimum reflow temperatures that generates the fear – of cold joints, incomplete wetting, inconsistent IMC formation or other reliability issues - if the peak temperature of a solder joint falls into that questionable space between 233 and 240☌. Applying the 13-degree guideline to the SnCuNi alloy results in a minimum peak temperature recommendation of 240☌. Recommended reflow temperatures are typically at least 13☌ higher than melting temperatures hence the SAC305 peak temperature window of 233 – 255. SAC305 begins to melt at 217☌, reaching its fully liquid state at approximately 220.6☌. Fear of full compatibility with SAC reflow processes. Why has it not gained major acceptance as an SMT alloy? In large part, fear. Because it contains no silver, it is much more economical than SAC alloys containing 1, 3 or even 4 percent of the precious metal, and it produces smooth, shiny, easy-to-inspect solder joints. Nickel-modified tin-copper solder, known commercially as SN100C®, is a leading lead-free alloy for PTH soldering, rework and hot air leveled PCB final finishes. Sn/Cu/Ni soldering performance at low temperatures. Walk on the ink-covered patch and turn on the radio tape to get your next objective. Head down the corridor (You can go in the first room to play the organ 5 times for that achievement), and right to the end. After killing them, another gate will open revealing a long, dark corridor. You will be attacked by Ink monsters, so kill them all. Hit the power switch on the wall and head back into the other room. Make a sharp right-hand turn and into a short passage way with ink-blocked stairs. The doorway will be blocked so smash the planks. Once you have the switches pressed, head back to the main switch and open the gate. If not, backtrack into the previous rooms and search around the shelves and doorways for the remaining switches. Head to the other side of the room and loot the shelf containing all of the Bacon Soup cans, and there may be a switch behind one. Continue through and you will come across a switch that needs the power to be redirected to it. Continue through the area until you come to a ink-covered corridor. There are 3 cans of Bacon Soup on a shelf at the end of the corridor. Head over to the door and use the axe to get rid of the planks and continue. The axe will be perched against a cuboard, so once you get up, grab that. Good Luck! GUIDE FOR 'STRIKE UP THE BAND' IS AT THE END OF THE SECTION, AFTER THE VIDEO.Īfter starting Chapter 2, you will wake up in a room after Chapter 1's events. I've decided to just do a full chapter walkthrough (Text & Video) for the whole Chapter, rather than explaining the achievements by themselves. Ultimately, the speaker's elegiac treatment of Lucy's death transforms her into an idealization of a young woman, more than a literal interpretation of the flesh-and-blood being she might have been before her premature death. Another poem written around the same period has been excluded from the grouping, despite being titled “Lucy Gray,” due to its supposedly factual inspiration. With the exception of “A slumber did my spirit seal,” all the poems in the grouping mention Lucy by name. As Wordsworth proclaimed in the prelude to the second volume of the Lyrical Ballads, he wished to “choose incidents and situations from common life” recounted through “language really used by men.” Like the other verses in the Lyrical Ballads-considered the defining work of the English Romantic literary movement-the “Lucy Poems” are written in a direct, vernacular style that reflects the speaker’s emotions. She represents Romantic ideals of love and loss, nature and the supernatural, joy and pain. Scholars now regard Lucy as the poet’s imaginary muse-the embodiment of Wordsworth’s poetic views and life experiences. However, her description does not match any particular known person from Wordsworth’s life. Some have suggested that Lucy may represent Wordsworth’s sister Dorothy or one of his love interests. To this day, the person on whom Lucy was based remains unknown. As the poems progress, we learn that she died young and inspired the speaker to write his elegiac verses about her. The “Lucy Poems” convey the unrequited love of the speaker for a woman named Lucy. Since then, scholars typically consider the works in the order in which they were written. However, in 1831, literary critic Thomas Powell recognized the works as a collection unified by a common theme. While the poems all focus on the same subject, Wordsworth did not intend to present them as a group or in a particular sequence. They include “Strange fits of passion have I known,” “She dwelt among the untrodden ways,” “I travelled among unknown men,” “Three years she grew in sun and shower,” and “A slumber did my spirit seal.” All but one of the poems, “I travelled among unknown men,” were included in the second volume of the Lyrical Ballads-a collection of poems Wordsworth composed with Samuel Taylor Coleridge. William Wordsworth’s “ Lucy Poems” consist of five verses composed between 17. This means you shouldn’t notice any massive difference in your usual internet goings-on in Australia while connected to any of the available Australian servers, and that 5ms latency makes gaming incredibly viable. Only Hotspot Shield has faster download speeds (0.5% vs 3%), but Mullvad beats Hotspot on upload speeds (3% vs 6%) and latency (1ms change vs 21ms) for Australian server tests. Mullvad VPN’s minimal changes when connected to Australian servers (Sydney for my tests) are incredibly impressive. For context, while TunnelBear doesn’t say how many servers it has, the next lowest server count of the VPNs we’ve reviewed is the 1,600+ from IPVanish. At the time of writing this review, Greece’s only server was offline, which isn’t great considering Mullvad only has 37 country options, which makes it the second-lowest count behind Norton Secure VPN for our VPN reviews, and there were only 766 servers. There isn’t any information beyond the server name and the at-a-glance logic that green means a server is good to use and red means it’s offline. Back on the location page, click or tap on the down arrow next to a country to select locations, and then use the down arrow next to the location to find specific servers. About eight seconds later you should be online, and disconnecting only takes a few seconds with only minor interruptions to real-time internet services (like music streaming) in my tests. Simply click on the country name, switch to one you like, then head back to the main screen and tap on ‘Secure my connection’. Mullvad starts by recommending Sweden (Mullvad’s home base) as the default connection option, but it’ll remember where you last connected to afterwards. While neither the Windows software nor Android app that I tested for this review are much to write home about in terms of their design, they get the job done in a straightforward way. The simplification returns when it comes to actually using Mullvad VPN. However, you will get the best value for every dollar you spent on it. The high-end hair extensions may require you to spend more upfront. This is the type of hair material that is pure as factories don’t treat it with chemicals. The most expensive hair extensions are created of 100% virgin human hair. The average cost of human hair extensions ranges from $20 to $500 depending on the specific type of hair that you choose. The problem with that kind of hair is that it often comes from untrusted sources, the labels are usually misleading, the quality of the hair is very bad, and the extensions can’t be worn for more than a month. They are known for their cheap price and can be bought everywhere, even on eBay and Aliexpress. When thinking about how to save some money on extensions, most people think that they need to buy synthetic or low-quality extensions. Next, let’s break down pricing even further as we compare two popular hair types. How one would know? Your hair extension is nearing the end of its service life when the tip of the hair strands becomes stringy and dry. In most cases, the high-end and more expensive ones are more durable and will normally last for more than 12 months even with continued use. Extensions DurabilityĬertain hair extensions last longer than others, you must know that by now. Other popular locations of human hair include Malaysia, Spain, and Brazil. While it’s all about Indian and Asian hair these days, there are few alternatives. This rule applies when comparing the cost of hair extensions in more expensive communities to the less expensive or lower-income sections of a city. Hair extensions are generally more expensive when purchased in larger cities mainly because the salons have higher operating expenses. There are a lot of products out there with misleading labels and information and many stores want to sell you low-quality extensions for a very high price so beware of that. Make sure that the seller you plan to buy hair from is trusted and transparent when it comes to their products. Most of the cheap hair extensions will become dry and stringy on the ends. If you want to get the best value for your money, it would be best that you avoid these hair extensions. Some retailers offer Indian or Asian hair extensions of poor quality, at prices that appear to be good bargains. When shopping for high-end hair extensions, it’s hard to find healthy ones. Because of their superior quality, Remy hair extensions occupy the top end of the price spectrum. That is the outside portion of the hair strand. One of the distinctive features of these hair extensions is the cuticle layer that remains intact. While such wefts are made of authentic human hair, there’s more to the eye than you can see. While still available in other quality grades, the high-end option we call “Remy hair extension”. Pick the weight between 40 and 100 grams, which will give you a significant amount of volume and thickness without costing a fortune. Those who don’t have a lot of money to spend. 220 grams is an insane amount of volume and although it looks cool, it’s not necessary for regular users. The density of extensions we measure in grams and the weights go from about 40g to 220g or even more. You can save a few more bucks and choose extensions that are not insanely thick. For example, AiryHair offers 16-inch, 100-gram Remy extensions (10 pieces) for only $46. You can get great length with much less.įifteen to twenty inches is what you should be aiming for and it will still extend your natural strands significantly. We know that thirty-inch, mermaid-like hair sounds very appealing but it’s not that necessary. What’s the Ideal Hair Extensions Length?Ī good way to save some money when buying hair extensions is going for less length. In other words, if you want to have a long head of hair, then you will have to spend more as opposed to shorter or medium-length hair extensions. The ideal amount will largely depend on the volume and length of your hair. The more and longer hair you want to wear, the higher the price that you must pay for your extensions. Aside from the type of hair, other factors affect the hair extension cost, and the major factors are the following: The Weight and Length of Hair The price variance of hair extensions is due to several reasons. 1 What Factors Affect Hair Extensions Cost? You’re an undigested corn kernel trying to get out of a human body intact and as quickly as possible. And, if you really want to spin it a certain way, it’s also a quick lesson in human anatomy. The Gist: Technically, you could call this a racing game. (You know that whole walking-into-walls gag that mimes do? It’s a big part in the game.) Me? I’ve always been a big fan of the ol’ “trying to lift the invisible weight” gag. To do that, you navigate through an invisible maze and complete minigame challenges. You have 3 minutes to rack up cash by pulling off trademark moves. The deal here is that you’re trying to earn some bucks, impressing Parisians on their lunch break. What could’ve amounted to a really bad joke is actually a clever little game. Now, with Mime Time, you’re a member of their silent gang. The Gist: Mimes, probably some of the most hated people on the planet. Highly recommended for neat freaks who need to feel the beat. So I guess there’s something good to come out of this, right? I mean, if I play this long enough, I’ll forget about the Jenga-fied pile of pint glasses building up in my sink. Rubbing out grease to the music keeps the water hot, and you up to your green elbows in Palmolive. Your job is to grab crud from the top of the stack, hold it over the sink, and scrub away grime to the rhythm. You’re a funky, dishwashing dinosaur-thing. The Gist: A game where you do the dishes? Yeah, I know, sounds about as much fun as…well…doing the dishes, but Dish Washington was among the top nodworthy games for the 2009 IGF student projects. Hey, no slight intended to the crew: You still have a fun game on your hands here–it could use just a little more spice. As for the music…well, I’m no big follower of the Indian movie scene, but the music here could be a lot catchier. While I think it’s really smart that you never get to see the road as you drive, it might be a little cooler to see the cabbie careening down city streets. I’ve found some really odd Half-Life 2 mods that, coincidentally, all came from the same academic program: the National Academy of Digital, Interactive Entertainment in Denmark ( DADIU, in their native tongue). However, I wanted to showcase a couple of my own picks. To wit, the 2009 Independent Games Festival recently announced the ten student-showcase winners, some of which are based on mods. The mod scene also happens to be a breeding ground for tomorrow’s great game designers. (In fact, I highly recommend that you check out Mod DB for a huge selection of game mods.) That means lots of extra, free games derived from what you’ve already bought. Old-school gaming nerds crafted game levels, weapons, character models–heck, entire games have been built using the guts of game engines for ages. What the heck is a mod? User-created game content–it’s been around since long before YouTube ever made do-it-yourself entertainment a household concept. I’m playing Karma Cab–a goofball mod for Half-Life 2. Nope, this isn’t some deleted scene from the end of Slumdog Millionaire. So a fat pig jumps into my cab, and then he busts out into song while I carve through city streets. |
